It all started one week ago. A client of ours came in Thursday, April 27th, 2017 to redeem his laptop which was in pawn. He originally pawned it April 21, 2017. It was the first time this item had been in our shop and he purchased it somewhere else. We inspected the laptop and tested it out at the time of the loan. It was in good working order. It was placed in a plastic bag, labelled, and moved 15 steps to our storage area where it was carefully placed on a shelf for laptops. Nothing was placed on top of it. Six days later, he came back and paid to redeem the laptop. His laptop was retrieved from the storage area and given back to him. He visually checked it and took it home.
After having the laptop in his possession for 48 hours, he came back. He complained that there was a dent on the top of the laptop and now it would not power up at all. He accused us of damaging his laptop and demanded we, “Make it right.”
We informed him that once an item has been redeemed and it leaves our store, we can not be held responsible for it’s condition. Inside our controlled environment, care is taken with our client’s goods and they are returned to them in the same condition they are brought in to us. Our clients have ample opportunity inside our store to check their items out and test them out before leaving our store. Once the item leaves, we have no control over what happens to it.
In this case, the laptop was in it’s owner’s care for two whole days. No phone calls were made about condition. He came in unanounced two days later and demanded we replace his laptop. It is unfortunate that his laptop is now damaged but the damage was not incurred on our premises.
The client was very upset and decided to shout nasty things at us and threaten to sue us and protest with a sign in front of our store. Three days later he made a cardboard sign claiming that we damaged his laptop and that no one should should shop here. At first he was shouting nasty things about us to everyone who came near our door. The police came down and spoke with him and us. They listened to both sides of the story and decided that it is a civil matter. They let the client know that he is not allowed to engage any potential customers in conversation and may protest quietly with a sign all he wants.
The first day, Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017 he protested from 11am to 4pm. The second day, Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017 he protested from 10am to 4:20pm. Today is day three and he was out there from 9:45am.
